Virgin and Child with Saint Dominic, Saint Michael,
Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist
GHIRLANDAIO
c. 1484
We left this image as is with the staining, except to cover a portion
of the Virgin's bodice, for the sake of modesty. This is one of our
favorite images of the Archangel Michael: here he is holding the Infant
Savior's globe and cross, symbols of His Kingship, as if guarding His
domain from the attacks of the infernal enemy. St. John the Evangelist
is kneeling, just as he did in Holy Scripture,
to adore His Lord and Savior.
