The Chaplet
of St. Michael and the Angels
PROMISES:
Appearing to the Servant
of God, Antonia d' Astonac, St. Michael revealed that he wished to be honored
by nine salutations corresponding to the nine choirs of Angels and that
an Our Father and three Hail Marys should be said in honor of each of these
nine choirs. The Archangel promised that whoever would practice this devotion
in his honor would have, when approaching the Holy Table, an escort of
nine Angels from each of the nine choirs. In addition, for the daily recital
of these nine salutations, he promised his continual assistance and that
of all the holy Angels during life, and after death, for those who have
been holy enough to warrant a short Purgatory, deliverance for themselves
and their relations.

Invocation
O glorious Prince St. Michael, Leader and Commander of the Heavenly Host, Guardian of souls, Vanquisher of rebel spirits, Servant in the house of the Divine King, and our glorious Guide, thou art brilliant in holiness and power.
Deliver us from all evil, for we turn to thee with confidence and enable us by thy gracious protection to serve God more faithfully everyday.
V. Pray for us O glorious
St. Michael, Prince of the Church of Jesus Christ.
R. That we may be made
worthy of His promises.
Let Us Pray.
Almighty and everlasting God, since in Thy infinite goodness and mercy Thou desireth the salvation of all men, Thou hast appointed the most glorious Archangel, St. Michael Prince of Thy Church. Make us worthy, we beg of Thee to be delivered by his powerful protection from all our enemies, that we may not be overcome by them at the hour of death, but that we may be conducted by St. Michael into the holy presence of Thy Divine Majesty. This, we beg through the merits of Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.
Prayer
to St. Michael, the Archangel
[Promulgated by Pope
Leo XIII]
Short Version:
St. Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray. a Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.
For Holy Church:
Longer Version
O glorious Prince of the Heavenly Host, St. Michael, the Archangel, defend us in the battle and in the fearful warfare that we are waging against the principalities and powers, against the rulers of this world of darkness, against the evil spirits. Come thou, to the assistance of men, whom Almighty God created immortal, making them in His own image and likeness and redeeming them at a great price from the tyranny of Satan. Fight this day the battle of the Lord with thy legions of holy Angels, even as of old, thou didst fight against Lucifer, the leader of the proud spirits and all his rebel Angels, who were powerless to stand against thee.
Neither was their place found anymore in Heaven. And that apostle Angel, transformed into an Angel of darkness who still creeps about the earth to encompass our ruin, was cast headlong into the abyss together with his followers.
But, behold, that first enemy of mankind, and a murderer from the beginning, has regained his confidence. Changing himself into an Angel of light, he goes about with the whole multitude of the wicked spirits to invade the earth and blot out the Name of God and of His Christ, to plunder, to slay, and to consign to eternal damnation the souls that have been destined for a crown of everlasting life. This wicked serpent, like an unclean torrent, pours into men of depraved minds and corrupt hearts the poison of his malice, the spirit of lying, impiety, and blasphemy, and the deadly breath of impurity and every form of vice and iniquity. These crafty enemies of mankind have filled to overflowing with gall and wormwood the Church, which is the Bride of the Lamb without spot. They have laid profane hands upon her most sacred treasures.
Make haste, therefore,
O invincible Prince, to help the people of God against the inroads of the
lost spirits and grant us the victory.
Amen.

Antiphon to the Archangel Michael:
Saint Michael, the Archangel, defend us in the battle, that we perish not in the fearful judgment.
Exorcism Prayer of Pope Leo XIII
In the Name of Jesus Christ, our God and Lord, strengthened by the intercession of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of God, of Blessed Michael the Archangel, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul and all the Saints, [and powerful in the holy authority of our ministry (parenthesis omitted by lay persons reciting this prayer)], we confidently undertake to repulse the attacks and deceits of the devil.
PSALM 67: God arises;
His enemies are scattered and those who hate Him flee before Him.
As smoke is driven
away, so are they driven; as wax melts before the fire, so the wicked perish
at the presence of God.
V. Behold the Cross
of the Lord, flee bands of enemies.
R. He has conquered,
the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the offspring of David.
V. May thy mercy, Lord,
descend upon us.
R. As great
as our hope in Thee.
The crosses
indicate a blessing to be given if a priest recites the Exorcism; if a
lay person recites it,
they
indicate the Sign of the Cross to be made silently by that person.
We drive you from us, whoever you may be, unclean spirits, all satanic powers, all infernal invaders, all wicked legions, assemblies and sects; in the Name and by the power of Our Lord Jesus Christ, + may you be snatched away and driven from the Church of God and from the souls made to the image and likeness of God and redeemed by the Precious Blood of the Divine Lamb. + Most cunning serpent, you shall no more dare to deceive the human race, persecute the Church, torment God's elect and sift them as wheat. + The Most High God commands you. + He with Whom, in your great insolence, you still claim to be equal; "He Who wants all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth" [1 Tim. 2: 4]. God the Father commands you. + God the Son commands you. + God the Holy Ghost commands you. + Christ, God's Word made flesh, commands you; + He Who to save our race outdone through your envy, "humbled Himself, becoming obedient even unto death" [Phil. 2: 8]; He Who had built His Church on the firm rock and declared that the gates of Hell shall not prevail against Her, because He will dwell with Her "all days even to the end of the world" [St. Mat. 28: 20]. The sacred Sign of the Cross commands you, + as does the power of the mysteries of the Christian Faith. + The glorious Mother of God, the Virgin Mary, commands you; + She who by her humility and from the first moment of her Immaculate Conception, crushed your proud head. The faith of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul and of the other Apostles commands you. + The blood of the Martyrs and the pious intercession of all the Saints commands you. +
Thus, cursed dragon, and you, diabolical legions, we adjure you by the living God, + by the true God, + by the holy God, + by the God "who so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that every soul believing in Him might not perish but have life everlasting" [St. John 3]; stop deceiving human creatures and pouring out to them the poison of eternal damnation; stop harming the Church and hindering her liberty. Begone, Satan, inventor and master of all deceit, enemy of man's salvation. Give place to Christ in Whom you have found none of your works; give place to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church acquired by Christ at the price of His Blood. Stoop beneath the all-powerful Hand of God; tremble and flee when we invoke the Holy and terrible Name of Jesus, this Name which causes Hell to tremble, this Name to which the Virtues, Powers and Dominations of Heaven are humbly submissive, this Name which the Cherubim and Seraphim praise unceasingly repeating: Holy, Holy. Holy is the Lord, the God of Armies.
V. O Lord, hear my prayer.
R. And let my
cry come unto Thee.
V. May the Lord be
with thee.
R. And with
thy spirit.
Let us pray.
God of Heaven,
God of earth, God of Angels, God of Archangels, God of Patriarchs, God
of Prophets, God of Apostles, God of Martyrs, God of Confessors, God of
Virgins, God Who has power to give life after death and rest after work,
because there is no other God than Thee and there can be no other, for
Thou art the Creator of all things, visible and invisible, of Whose reign
there shall be no end, we humbly prostrate ourselves before Thy glorious
Majesty and we beseech Thee to deliver us by Thy power from all the tyranny
of the infernal spirits, from their snares, their lies and their furious
wickedness; deign, O Lord, to grant us Thy powerful protection and to keep
us safe and sound. We beseech Thee through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.
From the snares of the
devil, deliver us, O Lord.
That Thy Church may
serve Thee in peace and liberty, we beseech Thee to hear us.
That Thou may crush
down all enemies of Thy Church, we beseech Thee to hear us.
[Holy water is sprinkled
in the place where we may be.]

Prayer When Unable to Assist at Daily Mass
Go, my Angel Guardian dear,
To church for me, -----the Mass to hear.
Go, kneel devoutly at my place
And treasure for me every grace.
At the Offertory time
Please offer me to God Divine.
All I have and all I am,
Present it with the Precious Lamb.
Adore for me the great Oblation.
Pray for all I hold most dear
Be they far or be they near.
Rmember too, my own dear dead
For whom Christ's Precious Blood was shed.
And at Communion bring to me
Christ's Flesh and Blood, my food to be.
To give me strength and holy grace
A pledge to see Him face to face
And when the Holy Mass is done
Then with His blessing, come back home.

Prayer to Saint Raphael the Archangel
Glorious Archangel, St. Raphael, great prince of the heavenly court,
illustrious by thy gifts of Wisdom and grace, guide of travelers by
land and sea, consoler of the unfortunate and refuge of sinners, I
entreat thee to help me in all my needs and in all the trials of this
life, as thou didst once assist the young Tobias in his journeying. And
since thou art the "physician of God," I humbly pray thee to heal my
soul of its many infirmities and my body of the ills that afflict it,
if this favor is for my greater good. I ask, especially, for angelic
purity, that I may be made fit to be the living temple of the Holy
Ghost. Amen.
455
I salute thee, holy Angel who didst comfort my Jesus in
His agony, and with thee I praise the Most Holy Trinity for having
chosen thee from among all the holy Angels to comfort and strengthen
Him Who is the comfort and strength of all that are in affliction. By
the honor thou didst enjoy and by the obedience, humility and love
wherewith thou didst assist the sacred Humanity of Jesus, my Saviour,
when He was fainting for very sorrow at seeing the sins of the world
and especially my sins, I beseech thee to obtain for me perfect sorrow
for my sins; deign to strengthen me in the afflictions that now
overwhelm me, and in all the other trials, to which I shall be exposed
henceforth and, in particular, when I find myself in my final agony.
Amen.
Hail, glorious Angel, appointed by God to be my guardian!
Hail, holy Angel, my protector in all dangers!
Hail, holy Angel, my defense in all afflictions!
Hail, holy Angel, my most faithful friend!
Hail, holy Angel, my guide!
Hail, holy Angel, my preceptor!
Hail, holy Angel, witness of all my actions!
Hail, holy Angel, my helper in every difficulty!
Hail, holy Angel, my counselor in doubt!
Hail, holy Angel, my shield at the hour of death!
Byzantine Prayer to the Angels
Unworthy as we are, we pray to thee, O leaders of the heavenly
hosts, to cover us by thy prayers with the protection of the wings of
thine immaterial glory, preserving us who come to thee and earnestly
cry, "Deliver us from sorrows, O chiefs of the powers above."
From the Roman Breviary
Angel-guardians of men, spirits and powers we sing,
Whom our Father hath sent, aids to our weakly frame,
Heavenly friends and guides, help from on high to bring
Lest we fail through the foemen's wile.
From the Roman Missal
O God, Who in a wonderful order hast established the ministry of Angels
and of men, mercifully grant that, as Thy holy Angels ever do Thee
service in Heaven, so they may at all times protect us on earth.
Novena
Prayer to One's Guardian Angel
[A novena is made by
saying a prayer for nine days in succession.]
O HOLY ANGEL, whom God,
by the effect of His goodness and His tender regard for my welfare, has
charged with the care of my conduct, and who assists me in all my wants
and comforts me in all my afflictions, who supports me when I am discouraged
and continually obtains for me new favors, I return thee profound thanks,
and I earnestly beseech thee, O most amiable protector, to continue thy
charitable care and defense of me against the malignant attacks of all
my enemies. Keep me away from all occasions of sin. Obtain for me the grace
of listening attentively to thy holy inspirations and of faithfully putting
them into practice. In particular, I implore thee to obtain for me the
favor which I ask for by this novena.
[Here mention your
petition.] Protect me in all the temptations and trials of this
life, but more especially at the hour of my death, and do not leave me
until thou hast conducted me into the presence of my Creator in the mansions
of everlasting happiness. Amen.
Prayer to the Archangel Gabriel
O blessed Archangel Gabriel, we beseech thee, do thou intercede for us at the throne of Divine mercy in
our present necessities that, as thou didst announce to Mary the
mystery of the incarnation, so through thy prayers and patronage in
Heaven we may obtain the benefits of the same, and sing the praise of
God forever in the land of the living. Amen.
The Little Office of the Holy Angels taken from MY-PRAYER BOOK, by Fr. F. X. Lasance
St.
Gertrude's Prayer to One's Guardian Angel
O MOST holy Angel of
God, appointed by God
to be my guardian,
I give thee thanks for all the
benefits which thou
hast ever bestowed on me in
body and soul. I praise
and glorify thee that thou
condescended to assist
me with such patient
fidelity, and to defend
me against all the
assaults of my enemy.
Blessed be the hour in
which thou were assigned
me for my guardian,
my defender and my
patron. In acknowledgment
and return for all
thy loving ministries to me, I
offer thee the infinitely
precious and noble Heart
of Jesus, and firmly
purpose to obey thee
henceforward, and most
faithfully to serve
my God. Amen.
O my good Angel, whom God, by His Divine mercy,
O PURE AND HAPPY Spirits
whom the Almighty selected to become the Angels
and Guardians of men.
I most humbly prostrate myself before thee to thank thee for
the charity and zeal
with which thou dost execute this commission. Alas, how many
pass a long life without
ever thanking their invisible friends, to whom they owe a
thousand times their
preservation!
O charitable Guardians
of those Souls for whom Christ died, O flaming Spirits,
who cannot avoid loving
those whom Jesus eternally loved, permit me to address
thee on behalf of all
those committed to thy care, to implore for each of them a
grateful sense of thine
many favors and also the grace to profit by thine charitable
assistance.
O Angels of those happy
infants who are as yet "without spot before God,"
I earnestly beseech
thee to preserve their innocence.
O Angels of youth, conduct
them, exposed to so many dangers, safely to the bosom
of God, as Tobias was
conducted back to his father.
O Angels of those who
employ themselves in the instruction of youth,
animate them with thy
zeal and love, teach them to emulate thy purity and
continual view of God,
that they may worthily and successfully co-operate
with the invisible
Guardians of their young charges.
O Angels of the clergy,
of those "who have the eternal Gospel to preach to them
that sit upon the earth,"
present their words, their actions and their intentions to
God, and purify them
in that fire of love that consumes thee.
O Angels of the missionaries
who have left their native land and all who were dear to them in
order to preach the
Gospel in foreign fields, protect them from the dangers which threaten
them,
console in their hours
of discouragement and solitude, and lead them to those souls who are in
danger of dying without
Baptism.
O Angels of infidels
and pagans, whom the True Faith has never enlightened, intercede for them,
that they may open
their hearts to the rays of grace, respond to the message delivered by
God's missioners and
acknowledge and adore the one true God.
O Angels of all who
travel by air, land or water, be their guides and companions, protect them
from all dangers of
collision, fire, and explosion and lead them safely to their destination.
O Guardian Angels of
sinners, charitable guides of those unhappy mortals whose perseverance
in sin would embitter
even thine unutterable joys, wert thou not established in the peace of
God!
Oh join me, I ardently
beseech thee, in imploring their conversion!
And thou, O Guardian
Angels of the sick, I entreat thee especially to help, console and
implore the spirits
of joy for all those who are deprived of health, which is among God's
most precious gifts
to man. Intercede for them, that they may not succumb to
despondency or lose
by impatience the merits they can gain in carrying with resignation
and joy the cross which
Christ has laid upon them as a special token of His love.
O Angels of those are
at this moment in the agonies of death, strengthen, encourage and
defend them against
the attacks of their infernal enemy.
O faithful Guides, holy
spirits, adorers of the Divinity, Guardian Angels of all creatures,
protect us all; teach
us to love, to pray, to wage combat on earth, so that one day we
may reach Heaven and
there be happy for all eternity! Amen.
O Angels of those who
are lingering in Purgatory, intercede for them that God
may permit thee to
bring them some balm; console them that they may know
that we are praying
for them and that we ask thee to join in our entreaties.
Consecration to One's Guardian Angel
O Holy Angel of God, here, in the presence of the Triune God and in the love of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer, I, N. N., a poor sinner, want to make a covenant with thee, his servant and my appointed Guardian, so that in union with thee, I might work with humility and fortitude for the glory of God and the coming of his Kingdom. Therefore, I implore thee to assist me, especially in the adoration of God and of the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar; in the contemplation of the word and the salvific works of God; in the imitation of Christ and in the love of His Cross in a spirit of expiation; in the faithful fulfillment of my mission within the Church, serving humbly after the example of Mary, my heavenly Mother, thy Queen. Thou, my good guardian Angel, who continually behold the face of our Father in Heaven, God entrusted me to thee from the very beginning of my life. I thank thee with all my heart for thy loving care. I commit myself to thee and promise thee my love and fidelity. I beg thee: protect me against my own weakness and against the attacks of the wicked spirits; enlighten my mind and my heart so that I may always know and accomplish the will of God; and lead me to union with God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
ANGEL OF GOD, my Guardian
dear,
To whom His love commits
me here,
Ever this day [or night]
be at my side,
To light and guard,
to rule and guide. Amen.
O HOLY Guardian Angel, my dear friend and solicitous guide on the dangerous way of life, to thee be heartfelt thanks for the numberless benefits which have been granted me through thy love and goodness and for the powerful help by which thou hast preserved me from so many dangers and temptations. I beg of thee, let me further experience thy love and thy care. Avert from me all danger, increase in me horror for sin and love for all that is good. Be a counselor and consoler to me in all the affairs of my life, and when my life draws to a close, conduct my soul through the valley of death into the kingdom of eternal peace, so that in eternity we may together praise God and rejoice in His glory. Through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.
O Angel of God, make me worthy of thy tender love, thy celestial companionship and thy never-failing protection!
GOOD NIGHT, my Guardian Angel,O all ye holy Angels, who contemplate unceasingly the uncreated beauty of the Divinity, in company with our ever glorious Queen, we present and offer to thee this novena not only as a means of obtaining favors [here specify your request], but also as a reparation for our past ingratitude, and that of all men. Deign to accept it, O amiable Spirits, in union with the love and devotion of such Saints as were especially devout to thee, and obtain for us the grace to spend this life fervently that it may be the commencement of that blessed life which we hope to live forever with thee in Heaven.
O God, Who with wonderful order hast regulated the functions of Angels and men, grant that those who always assist before Thy throne in Heaven may defend our lives here on earth, through Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.By St. Charles Borromeo
IN THE NAME of the Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Ghost, I, a poor, unhappy sinner, make this solemn declaration before thee, O beloved Angel, who has been given me as a protector by the Divine Majesty:
1. I desire to die in the Faith which the Holy, Roman and Apostolic Church adheres to and defends, in which all the Saints of the New Testament have died. I pray thee, provide that I may not depart out of this life before the Holy Sacraments of that Church have been administered to me.
2. I pray that I may depart from this life under thy holy protection and guidance, and I beseech thee, therefore, to assist me at the hour of my death and to propitiate the Eternal judge, whose Sacred Heart was inflamed with most ardent love for sinners upon the Cross.
3. With my whole heart I long to be made a partaker of the merits of Jesus Christ and His holy Mother Mary, thine exalted Queen, and I pray thee, through the sufferings of Jesus on the Cross, to mitigate the agonies of my death and to move the Queen of Heaven to cast her loving glance upon me, a poor sinner, in that dreadful hour, for my sweetest consolation.
O my dearest Guardian Angel! Let my soul be placed in thy charge, and when it has gone forth from the prison of this body, do thou deliver it into the hands of its Creator and Redeemer, that with thee and all the Saints, it may gaze upon Him in the bliss of Heaven, love Him perfectly and find its blessedness in Him throughout eternity. Amen.To be said for nine consecutive days.
O HOLY ANGEL, whom God,
by the effect of His goodness and His tender regard
for my welfare, has
charged with the care of my conduct, and who assists me in all
my wants and comforts
me in all my afflictions, who supports me when I am discouraged
and continually obtains
for me new favors, I return thee profound thanks, and I
earnestly beseech thee,
O most amiable protector, to continue thy charitable care
and defense of me against
the malignant attacks of all my enemies. Keep me away
from all occasions
of sin. Obtain for me the grace of listening attentively to thy
holy inspirations and
of faithfully putting them into practice, In particular, I implore thee
to obtain for me the
relief and deliverance of all the Souls in Purgatory, the ones who
prayed for the Souls
themselves while still on earth; the forgotten and abandoned Souls;
the souls of my relatives
