Maps of Foggia Province and Gargano Locale The Province of Foggia is administratively divided into 64 townships and cities. The Parco nazionale del Gargano, established in 1995, is a peninsula partly mountainous and partly covered by the remains of a very old forest, Foresta Umbra, the only remaining part in Italy of the ancient oaks and beech trees that once covered much of Central Europe, and in the north are two major salty lakes, Lesina and Varano; the coastline is composed of a series of spectacular bays and cliffs, a holiday destination. Monte Gargano is also the site of the oldest shrine in Western Europe dedicated to the archangel Michael, Monte Sant'Angelo sul Gargano. VIEW THE STATUE OF THE ARCHANGEL The province includes vast territories of intensive agriculture, in previous centuries largely used as pastures for the flocks coming in the winter months from Abruzzi, Molise, Irpinia and Lucania. Today it is the place of pilgrimage to the sanctuary of San Pio da Pietrelcina (Padre Pio) in San Giovanni Rotondo, see yellow arrow pointer and below just under APULIA in red. The background used on this page and the previous is from a photograph of a top of a hill in Gargano. Padre Pio used to like to take walks in the countryside much like this one.
