Bernini's Blessed Sacrament Altar

1673-74
Saint Peter's, Rome

This was Bernini's last commission at Saint Peter's and his last altar work. This shrine is constructed with precious metals: gilded bronze, porta santa marble and lapis lazuli, in keeping with the permanent home of the sacramental Body of Christ.

The Holy Trinity by Pietro da Cortona was installed previously, in 1631. This painting is in poor condition with much deterioration in the robes of Christ and mottling on the figures. I took the liberty of "retouching" small portions here and there, but I left the color as it is in the photograph and most of the wear and tear so you would have some idea of its condition.

Bernini had originally sketched four Angels supporting candlesticks, but finally decided on a pair in rapt adoration.
