Tomb of Pope Alexander VII
BERNINI
NO DATE

1665-1667

This Pontiff was from Siena; the conclave that elected him lasted for three months. When he was chosen great things were expected of him, but upon taking the papal office, he passed off much of his responsibilities to his Cardinals. However, he did condemn in strong language the Jansenist heresy, in union with previous Pontiffs when the heresy was at its most flourishing. The Jansenists took their name from a Belgium theologian, whose writings themselves were orthodox; they, unfortunately stressed Original Sin to the point they lost all context and became purveyors of those who say man has no free will and is utterly depraved in his nature. In fact they became like the Calvinists; the heresy lasted for almost 150 years and was particularly strong in France.
