Saint
Frediano of Lucca
BISHOP
Feast Day: November 18
d. c. 588
St.
Frediano was of royal Irish descent. According to Pope St. Gregory the
great the Saint became a monk and went to Rome on a pilgrimage.
Tradition has it that he was the Bishop of Lucca about 560 and hailed
for his virtues by laity and clergy. He was skilled in engineering and
strove to lessen the disastrous floods of the Serchio River, working a
miracle with a rake by which he scraped a new course for the river,
which obeyed his command. He is invoked against floods. His name is
from the German which means "bearer of peace."
