ST. PEREGRINE IN FRAME

St. Peregrine
Patron of Cancer Patients

May 1

1260-1345

There are four Saints of this name. Our Saint for May is St. Peregrine Laziosi.  Born at Forli, Italy, of well-to-do parents, he was active in his youth in the antipapal party in Romagna but after an encounter with St. Philip Benizi changed his way of life: he had punched St. Philip Benizi viciously in the face. This good and gentle Saint meekly turned the other cheek. St. Peregrine was so deeply moved that he immediately changed.

The BlessedVirgin appeared to him in a vision urged him to "go to Siena" and join the Servites of Mary. For 30 years thereafter, he led a life of repentance, prayer, and, whenever possible, solitude and silence.

He was ordained a priest and became an eloquent preacher, persuasive in reconciling sinners.

He suffered from an ugly foot cancer which was extremely painful and made him revolting to others. Through it all he showed patience and courage. The night before he was to have his foot amputated, he was miraculously cured while he slept. He became, as a result, the patron of all who suffer from foot ailments, cancer or incurable diseases. St. Peregrine died at 85 in 1345. He was canonized in 1726.

PRAYER TO ST. PEREGRINE

We implore thy powerful aid, St. Peregrine,
for all who are living unworthy of their Christian vocation.
May they be converted from a sinful, selfish life, as thou wast,
by the good example of those who are obedient to Christ's counsels.

We invoke thy special help, St. Peregrine,
for all in religious life that they may remain faithful
as thou didst to their vows, and ever steadfast
in their commitment to Christ.

We seek thy merciful aid, St. Peregrine,
especially for those afflicted or threatened by cancer,
by any ailment of the foot, or by any incurable diseases.
Please help us quickly to find a cure for cancer, and a remedy
for all our human infirmities of soul, mind, and body. Amen.

V. Keep us, O Lord, as the apple of Thine eye,
R. In the shadow of Thy wings protect us.

St. Peregrine, we come to thee confidently to implore thy aid with God in our necessity.
Thou wast converted instantly from a worldly life by the good example of one holy person.
Thou wast also cured instantaneously of cancer by God's grace and unceasing prayer.
In thy gracious kindness please ask the Lord to heal us also in body, mind, and soul.
May we then also imitate thee in doing His work with renewed vigor and strength. Amen.

FOR SICK RELATIVES AND FRIENDS

O great St. Peregrine, thou who hast been called "The Mighty," "The Wonder-Worker"
because of the numerous miracles which thou hast obtained from God
for those who have had recourse to thee, thou who for so many years
didst bear in thine own flesh this cancerous disease that destroys
the very fiber of our being, and who had recourse to the source of all grace
when the power of man could do no more;
thou who wast favored with the vision of Jesus coming down from His Cross
to heal thy affliction, ask of God and Our Lady, the cure of these sick persons
whom we entrust to thee.

(Pause here and silently recall the names of the sick persons for whom you are praying.)

Aided in this way by thy powerful intercession, we shall sing to God,
now and for all eternity, a song of gratitude for His great goodness and mercy. Amen.

PRAYER TO THE MOTHER OF SORROWS
THROUGH THE INTERCESSION OF SAINT PEREGRINE

O my dearest Mother Mary, Mother of
Sorrows, behold me, thy child, in prayer.
I have come to plead for this special favor
through the intercession of thy faithful servant,
Saint Peregrine. (Mention your request.)

O Sorrowful Mother, I beg thee to present my petition to thy Divine Son.
If thou wilt pray for me, I cannot be refused.

I know, dearest Mother, that thou doth want me to seek
God's will in all things.

Therefore, with childlike trust I abandon myself to God's Holy Will
concerning my request. If what I ask for should not be granted,
pray that I may receive that which will be of greater benefit to my soul.

Mother of Sorrows, I love thee!

I put all my confidence in thee, because thy prayers before God are most powerful.
For the greater glory of God and through the intercession of St. Peregrine,
whom thou hast led to Sainthood, hear and grant my prayer. Amen.
