  Saint Francis Borgia

October 10

He was born in Spain in 1510, a member of the Borgia family of historic fame. When his wife died he renounced his duchy and became a Jesuit priest, a very popular preacher and spiritual write. Before he died in 1572 he was elected the general of the Order and as such he undertook the task of promoting the first missions to the new world by the Jesuits. He died in 1572 and was canonized in 1671. He is usually depicted in art wearing the simple cassock of the priest and is invoked against earthquakes. He is both the patron of Spain and Portugal. The above painting is in the cathedral in Valencia. A number of paintings on the subject of the Saint with an impenitent sinner who is dying have been executed.
