The Triumph of St. Hermengildo
FRANCISCO DE HERRERA THE YOUNGER
1654
St. Hermengild [Hermengildo]
April 13
D. 585
Son of Leovigild, Arian Visigoth King of Spain, he was raised an
Arian but was converted to orthodoxy by his wife, Indegundis, daughter
of King Sigebert of Austrasia. When Leovigild disinherited him because
of his conversion, Hermenegild led a revolt against his father. Unable
to secure aid from the Eastern Emperor or the Romans, he was defeated
by his father at Seville but was reconciled with him. Later Leovigild
demanded he return to Arianism, and when he refused, Leovigild had him
axed to death.
