St. Bertand Le Mans
June 30
C. 553-623
Born at Autun, France, he was ordained in Paris by St. Germanicus,
served at the cathedral school there and became archdeacon, and was
appointed bishop of Le Mans in 587. He supported the Neustrian kings,
was driven into exile when their fortunes were in decline several
times, but was reinstated by King Clotaire II in 605. Bertrand was
noted for his aid to the poor, his interest in agriculture, especially
grape growing, and he founded a monastery, a hospice, and built a
church.
