This work by Murillo was sent from Spain to the Vatican Picture Gallery in 1876 as a gift to Bl. Pius IX from the Spanish King Alfonso XII. Saint Peter of Arbues, born into an aristocratic family in Spain in 1440, was a theology teacher. He was known to be an austere, very pious man, with a great zeal for defending the dogmas of the Faith. King Ferdinand appointed him as his representative in the region of Aragon. Some of the locals did not appreciate his stern rule and plotted against him. On the night of September 15, 1485, while he was on his knees saying Matins, St. Peter was attacked and killed by one of the conspirators. He was beatified in the 17th century and canonized by Bl.
