St. Elpidius, Abbot

September 2

This Saint lived in the fourth century, it is thought, at Piceno, Italy. Some sources list him as a disciple of St. Basil and while there are no certain documents relating his Sainthood, we know from the large devotional following that he had that he existed and was revered as a Saint. Although he is considered to have been an abbot, in art he is usually shown dressed as a soldier; his name is Greek for hope.
