Protecting Angels: Saint Raphael

Often in history the Angels came to help
men and women who were good and who were
in danger. When the holy prophet Daniel was
thrown by the wicked king into the den
of lions, an Angel came from Heaven to
protect him, closing
the mouths of the lions so that
they did not harm God's
friend Daniel. Once three Angels came to earth to visit
the holy man Abraham. They came to remind him of God
and to get him ready to be the father of all the faithful. Once
while Jacob was on a long journey, he fell asleep and saw
reaching up to Heaven a ladder, up and down which the Angels kept coming and going. They were messengers to earth.

Angel messengers come to be our helpers. We do not see them, but they are around us all the time.

Once on a time, a long time ago, there lived a very holy man named Tobias. He had a son of the same name. He had to send his son on a long journey, for the father was blind and he needed some money owed him by a man in a far country. The journey was very dangerous. Young Tobias was a little afraid.

But suddenly he was joined by one who he thought was another young man. It was really the Angel Raphael. They had a wonderful journey together; you can read about it in the Bible [Tobit 5]. The Angel protected Tobias against a poisonous fish and guarded him against fierce devils. He found for him a good, pure girl to be his wife. He helped him collect the money that belonged to his father. And then he returned home.

So travelers often pray to the Angel Raphael to protect them too on dangerous journeys.

His Feast is October 24th.
