First Sorrowful Mystery:
The Agony in the Garden
After the Last Supper Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemani. There He
fell on His face and prayed long and earnestly. He foresaw hat cruel
suffering awaited Him. He also saw before Him all the sins grave and
vile, past, present and future, of all men. He understood that many
souls would not be thankful to Him and would not benefit by His Passion
and Death, and would be eternally lost. His Soul was ready to die with
sorrow and He sweated blood. To His Father in Heaven He cried out in
pain, "Father, if Thou wilt, remove this chalice from Me: but yet not
My will but Thine be done."
FRUIT OF THE MYSTERY: CONTRITION FOR OUR SINS
It is for you that Jesus endured His agony and shed His Precious Blood
on the Mount of Olives. The Eternal God suffered for you, ungrateful,
sinful creature that you are! Will you not for the future try to love
Him more and serve Him better? Think what grief of soul your sins
caused your Divine Savior! And yet you pay so little heed to your sins,
and have so very little sorrow for them. Confess your ingratitude and
indifference. Compassionate Him and thank Him. Repent sincerely and
renew in yourself a great horror for sin.
