The Madonna dei Battuti "The Madonna of the Flagellants" VITALE DA BOLOGNA 1309-1361 Tempera on wood panel. It is thought to have served as a processional banner for the church of the Ospedale dei Battuti Bianchi in Ferrara. It is dated to circa 1340; in 1841 the work made its home in the Vatican Library, but was moved to the Picture Gallery in 1909. The Madonna is in remarkably good condition for so old a painting. We restored most of the image, leaving a few stains in the background. The color is as in the original, with the gold frame added for presentation on the web. This is one of Catholic Tradition's favorite Madonnas of the "Iconic" style. All graphic accessories on this page copyrighted by Catholic Tradition.
