Gallery, Section Two This
marble masterpiece is a complex composition blending classical
material, such as the white marble you see, with all the ornate detail
associated with the Counter-Reformation period of art that came into
being in order to defend the traditions of the Catholic Church. The
Protestant Revolution was essentially Puritanical, a removal of the
Incarnation in so many ways so as to diminish the devotion of the
faithful, that dedicated Catholic artists and sculptors made every
attempt to counter the minimalist approach of the Protestants. We left
this piece with the slight staining of the ages as it is perfect as it
is. Note that the little Savior King so sweetly atop His Mother's lap is already signaling His Reign, one of the deliberate touches of the Counter-Reformation schools of art. The little "pebbly points" throughout the relief are there because we did not want to reduce the size so you could view all the features of the figures. Our old scanner is limping along and we do not want to unduly exercise it. You probably don't mind at all.All graphic accessories on this page copyrighted by Catholic Tradition.
