Gallery, Section Two
Bernini's Tomb of Pope
Urban
VIII
This
work took twenty years to complete and was not unveiled until 1647,
three years after the death of the Pontiff. Urban's tomb is on the left
of the Cathedra Petri of the previous page. The two women with children
represent Charity and Justice, left and right correspondingly. In the
center is the macabre Angel of death, which Bernini seems to have been
almost obseessed with because this figure is found on other sculptures
of his.
