ST. GREGORY BARARIGO

The Saint was born in Venice, 1625 and initially taught by his father a senator;
after legal studies in Padua he assumed a diplomatic career, serving at the Peace of
Westphalia at Mü
nster, and shortly after, became a priest. In 1656, Pope Alexander VII called him to Rome to assist the sick during the plague. He was made Bishop of Bergamo and helped to carry out the Counter-Reformation. He was then installed Bishop of Padua and later made Cardinal. He was the founder of colleges, seminaries, and libraries. He died in 1697, was beatified in 1761 and canonized in 1960. He is depicted in art in his Cardinal's robes.

His name is from the Greek and means, "watchful, alert".
