This
painting is sometimes referred to as The
Madonna of the Decemviri because it was commissioned by the
College of the Decemviri
or The Council of Ten for their chapel in the Palazzo dei Priori.
Subsequently it was sent to France, then returned in 1816 to Pope Pius
VII who had it placed in the Vatican Picture Gallery 4 four years later.
